Juniors

About the Juniors

Bloxwich Hockey Club has an established Junior Section which has consistently delivered youngsters to the clubs Mens & Ladies adult sides and proudly into the regional age group squads as part of the England Hockey Single System.

If your child is already a hockey player or if they've never played before, they will be made very welcome. Our training sessions are tailored for all abilities and age groups. Hockey sticks can also be provided.

Our fully trained coaching team are all DBS checked, and can help your child have fun and reach their full potential.

We run training sessions on Saturday mornings 9-10am at Willenhall EACT. Come along, have some fun and learn new skills.

Success Stories / Highlights

  • The growing numbers at training is beyond expectations, the different locations players are now coming from as well following word of mouth, social media etc
  • Our raised profile on social media, (especially with the juniors) is having a big impact across the community and the club itself
  • The number of coaches/helpers we have has been great, this makes a massive difference for the juniors
  • The impact the junior section has had on the adult section (especially M3/L4) – we have also seen parents join us as players
  • Relationship with Wednesfield High
  • Sunday games/matches - the support and organisation has been excellent
  • Bloxwich links to county coaching and now seen players interested in joining BHC from other areas/clubs

Areas for Development

  • Increase the number of coaches and from a range across the club, current coaches mainly from M1/L1/L2 this causes difficulty depending on fixture times
  • Development of coaches
  • Additional support and larger squad for the Badgers / Bears each week
  • More referral to the junior vision statements on how we want to play hockey
  • Consider how we engage parents within the club

England Player Pathway/County Provisions

Bloxwich Hockey Club is proud to advise that we run The South West Staffordshire Development Centre that is the entry point for county hockey in our area. If a junior is deemed able to move forward to full county hockey they are then moved forward into Staffordshire County.

We are also involved at this point as currently we run Staffordshire Boys Under 15 Academy.

South West Staffordshire Development Centre

The South West Staffordshire Development Centre is part of Staffordshire Hockey’s “Player Pathway” and is the home of junior Hockey coaching and development within the South West Staffordshire area. It is a fantastic opportunity to gain access to quality coaching and to represent this area against other Development Centres within Staffordshire.

A Development Centre is the first step to reaching the very top! It is the entry point to The Staffordshire Player Pathway and the stepping stone to further representative Hockey opportunities within the “Player Pathway” or the newly named “Talent System”. Once the Development Centre cycle is complete, nominations are made for juniors to attend the Academy Centre (Staffordshire). From there the next step would be recommendations for England Hockey Talent Academies and from there, National levels (e.g. England!)

Has The Player Pathway changed and what is the new Talent System?

The “Player Pathway” has changed now and England Hockey is overseeing a new version called the “Talent System”. The “Talent System” is aimed at players aged 15 to 18. The “Talent System” will provide opportunities for higher quality contact time with players in the right environment. A select group of Clubs have been awarded Talent Academy status and they will be delivering the Talent System. The local Talent Academy clubs to Staffordshire are Beeston HC in Nottingham, Timperley HC in Cheshire, Stourport HC in Worcestershire and an England Hockey run TA called Greater Birmingham.

We see some challenges with this new system for the young hockey players in Staffordshire.

How do players who are younger than the proposed age bands develop the attributes needed to become potential TA players in the future?

How best can we as county support older players who might not get into a TA in the first year?

How can we support the ongoing development of hockey players within the county and ensure they receive high level coaching and give them the opportunity to fully develop their hockey?

Is it possible to access quality approved hockey coaching locally in Staffordshire without having to go out of our region?

As Staffordshire Hockey is an England Hockey approved organisation we will attempt to answer those questions…..

Staffordshire Hockey is responsible for organising and running Development Centres and the County Academy and we will using these two routes for delivering quality coaching locally and at an affordable price. The Development Centres across Staffordshire will come together in September in a festival and from that point, the process of Staffordshire Talent Academy will start.

So what happens at a Development Centre?

Players take part in a range of training sessions or camp based activities to develop their skills and begin to stretch them beyond school and club hockey. It also allows representative opportunities!

All sessions will be delivered by experienced 'Player Pathway' staff, who will coach in accordance to the England Hockey coaching philosophy and deliver their 'National Development Themes' for players.

When do Development Centre and Academy sessions run?

Typically Development Centres will run in the summer months. South West Staffordshire DC are going to run 2 x 3 hour sessions in July and 2 x 3 hours sessions in August.

Staffordshire AC sessions will run from September through to the Spring/early Summer.

Costs?

There will be a £12 cost to attend each three hour coaching session. Any all-day Camps will incur a higher charge.

Eligibility?

The Development Centre is always looking for new players to be involved, plus players already within the 'Pathway' may be expected to attend. Below lists all players:

• Players that fall within the 2022 Age Group brackets (school years)

• New Players

• All players who trained/played at a Development Centre last year
